While I was at work today I jotted down a little list of things that either entered or exited my life during 2010... maybe not completely, but at least in some fashion or extent. Jon and I enjoy comparing our lifestyle now to when we first met. Neither of us were extremely unhealthy in 2005, but our food choices, exercise habits, and overall relationships are in a much more satisfying place than they were then. I think these areas of our lives are an evolving continuum, the difference being in how much of an effort you put into directing them somewhere worthwhile. Okay, so without further chit chat... my in's and out's of twenty ten:
Out: Hamburgers (especially from fast food restaurants)
In: Chicken or Veggie Dishes
Out: Iceburg Lettuce
In: Spinach Lettuce
...Iceburg lettuce contains almost zero nutrients, and I think it tastes awful. I add spinach lettuce to my Subway order, pizza and even omelets.
Out: Dancing With The Stars
In: Parenthood
Out: Cotton clothing
In: Polyester and other Fibers
...Cotton is not a runner's friend, and I've finally deemed myself enough of a runner to own some real running attire.
Out: Carpet
In: Refinished Hardwood Floors
...And I'm pretty proud about them, too. When debating what to do with our floors after tearing up the old, disgusting carpet we weighed several factors. Hardwood floors won because they were less expensive, a DIY project, and trap WAY less dirt.
Out: Silk Plants
In: Diggin' in the Dirt
...I planted over 10 pots of flowers outside this Spring/Summer. We also had our own veggie garden and herbs. While I loved the overall mission and determination, it was pretty ambitious for new homeowners with such an extensive home update list. Lesson learned for next year.
Out: Refillable Water Bottle
In: Ice Mountain Bottled Water
...This one may sound backward, but it's not. Refilling a water bottle without thoroughly washing it with soap and hot water allows the build-up of bacteria and germs in your bottle and lid. The whole point of a water bottle for me was to always have a good amount of cold, fresh water on hand. When there were only a few ounces left, I'd fill it back up and stick it in the fridge so it was ready for next time. Not sanitary. Additionally, if the water you drink has been filtered of all minerals, it will absorb the minerals from your body as it passes through, leaving your body deprived. So now, I'm an Ice Mountain junkie. We buy a 24-pack weekly. It's affordable, the bottles are recyclable, and no more bacteria build-up. I know water bottles are super trendy, I own two, but they've been tucked away for now. Here's an article I found about water and minerals.
Out: "Delivery Pizza"
In: Kashi's Thin Crust Margherita Pizza
Out: OTC Medicine
In: Herbs, Sleep, and Hot Showers
...Why have I never paid attention to the fact that OTC medicines only treat symptoms and not the actual cause of my sickness? Now when I am feeling under the weather I opt for Echinacea, GoldenSeal, Vitamin C, hot showers, lots of sleep, healthy foods (because your body doesn't have the extra energy to process junk food when it's fighting off sickness), and lots of water to flush out toxins.
Out: Twilight
In: Anything else!
...I wish, anyway. I stand by my opinion that the movies are atrocious. I don't care if the books are 'amazing' (which is probably questionable as well), this twilight mania needs to come to an end. Just sayin'...
And that's that my lovely friends. =)
Okay I love this post. I must say that any type of fast food is out of the question for me but I can't give up my red meat! Check out Buffalo Burgers, it might sound gross but they are very lean and delicious. I probably eat red meat twice a week. Spinach is the most amazing thing on this planet next to puppies. Have you ever tried Kale? Cody loves it, its very bitter but I sometimes eat it.
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of Kale, but pretty any type of green has more nutrition value than iceburg. And most of it tastes better too! I have also done without fastfood and honestly can say I have not missed it at all. Making pizza at home is also fun, you can find recipes for crust online and then make them anyway you like! And about the water bottles- try a metal one. They are supposed to cut down on the germs, I rinse my bottle out and wash the top when I get home from work every night to keep it clean. Then thrown it in the dishwasher weekly. And Buffalo is really good!
